Day 13: Helmsdale to John O'Groats, 52 miles

We made it!!!

Inspite of a force 10 gale headwind we powered on through the last 52 miles arriving in John O'Groats by 2 o'clock.

The day started off with yet another fully loaded breakfast followed by some massive hills, which, combined with the wind, made it feel like cycling through thick jelly. All in all today was one of the hardest days cycling and because of the headwind we even had to pedal downhill so there was no respite. We stopped after 20 miles for a cup of tea in a field where the farmer was muck spreading. He joined us for a cup of tea as he was a very friendly bloke... but no body shook his hand!

Brian and Vic joined us to cycle the final 5 miles into John O'Groats. Once we arrived it was very windy and cold, we were glad to get the photos over and done with so that we could load the vans and grab a sandwich and a cup of tea before heading southwards to our overnight stop in Perth.

Mishap mile was mile 999: when just as we were saying that there had not been any problems all day, David got a puncture as we rolled into John O'Groats. Winners of the mishap miles and their prizes will be publised within the next few days.

We have calculated that with pledges and promises we are within touching distance of our £10,000 target. Thank you so much to everyone that has supported us throughout our ride. We have had a few celebratory beers tonight in Perth but yet another early start tommorow to get home asap.

Day 12; Inverness to Helmsdale, 72 miles (955 in total)

Undeterred by the pounding Highland wind and rain we have arrived in Helmsdale, Sutherland, our last stop before John O'Groats, which is now only 55 miles away.

We set out from Inverness at around half eight, after yet another breakfast feast of porridge and a full English – thanks mainly again to Andrew (Porridge) and David (full (ish) English). We bade farewell to Father Christmas and his wife, (who had arrived on a tandem last night) and headed north more or less tracking the A99. All day there was a very strong headwind, which made it feel like we were cycling uphill all day.

The last of us arrived around 4:30 pm and most of the riders feel that today has been the hardest day’s cycling so far. However, we only have 55 miles to go as the road sign outside the hostel constantly reminds us.

After lunch we only had 30 miles left to go but the wind and rain dug in and it was very hard work. As a group we spread out as we each followed our own pace in the testing conditions. Stewart kindly took the wind for Ian and David as they crossed a bridge across an estuary only for them to pass him and leave him for dead on the other side – taking the pirate’s code a bit too far.

Mishap mile was mile 923; when leaving the lunch stop Kieran fell off his bike, bashing his knee and hand in the process as he put his body in the way to prevent his bike from getting scratched, and AJ got yet another flat tyre. Kieron was ok although he lay in the road until somebody helped him get up in case he scratched his bike in the process.

Thank you for all the continuing donations and support. We are now very close to our target of £10k so if you have not yet donated then there is still time left.

Day 11 Glen Nevis to Inverness (70 miles 883 total)

Started more or less on time, in considerably better conditions than on arrival in Glen Nevis. We met another group who were also doing LEJOG only they intended to finish in 8 days, hardcore or what!

We set off down the Glen and then joined the A82to Spean Bridge giving us some really great views of Ben Nevis that still has a little snow on the top even after all the hot weather!

At Spean Bridge we stopped at the Commando Memorial as Ian's Dad did his training here many years ago. It was quite moving really as it is on a piece of ground with nothing around it and Ben Nevis as the backdrop, especially the area of rememberance where memorials to dead Commando are laid, to quote Ian 'there are a lot of young bones up there'. While there Andy got talking to some Australian tourists and they donated £20.00, thank you.

From there it was down to Fort Augustus at the southern end of Loch Ness. This put us all on monster watch, but unfortunately there was no sign, perhaps it was the sight of the seven of us in our Lycra that kept her down.

Apart from that it was a relatively quiet day, not many mishaps to speak of, just the odd near miss and swerve on the bikes as we all slipstreamed one another too closely, not even any punctures! Therefore despite the headwind, we made relatively good time and arrived at the Youth Hostel in Inverness at 1530, the earliest yet.

There is only candidate for mishap of the day:

Stewart decided that he needed to spread his money around this mronong to all the poor people in Fort William so threw his wallet on the floor and the cash exploded from it! This caused Adam to re enact the Crystal Maze collecting the money in the air tunnel. All very amusing.... This happened at mile 816.

To give you an idea of the level to which the trip has degenearated and also show how just how competitive the Johnson brothers are was highlighted at the lunch stop today. Stewart and David decided to have a race opening a can of Rice Pudding with a 'jiffy' can opener...... Stewart won in a time of 38 seconds, David came a poor second in a little over a minute complaining of numb hands from the cycling. Watch this space for the rematch.

A special thank you to the Bikers from Lancashire whom we got chatting to at the lunch stop today, I seem to recall that negotiations were underway to exchange a push bike for one of their's they didn't want to take this as it would spoil the challenge, but did give us £35.00.

Our sincere thanks to all of you who have donated recently either on the website or by communicating directly with us. THANKYOU. Including Chris Lee, Kim's Aunt Kay and her family and Cameron 'The Yank'.

Thanks also for the texts and messages that we have been getting they are great encouragement and remind us that it is really important that we all finish this and complete our end of the bargain.

Finally......only 2 days to go. Watch out for the drop in sales Sudocream!

Day 10 Crianlarich to Glen Nevis (79 miles 813miles in total)

The day started quite slowly Andy who had replaced a spoke yesterday evening, found a puncture in his rear tyre. The rest of us were ready to get going as Stewart and Ian's friend 'Johnnie' didn't turn up, so it was early to bed all round.

As Andy and Kieron are the speed monsters the rest of us started about on time at 0830 and left them to catch up. It only took about 7 miles.

For the ride itself we commenced at 750 feet and immediately climbed to 900 feet that woke the legs up! Following on from this we headed to Oban and descended quite quickly to around 150 feet where we stopped at Lochawe for tea, after which we contined down beside the Loch before turning north at the coast. We then continued to track the coastline north on the A898 with only a couple of short breaks. Then the rain set in and it can rain in the Highlands, so we all arrived at the hostel drenched.

We all agreed that today's ride was beautiful even if it was raining and we would recommend it to anyone. There have been no sightings of strange creatures yet, but Loch Ness draws ever nearer!

Sleeping arrangements are interesting with 8 of us sharing a room so you can imagine the aroma that is emminating already and we haven't even gone to bed yet!

Candidates for Mishap mile are:

Andy for puncturing his tyre while repairing the spoke.

Ian decided that his glasses would look better if he threw them under a car, which he did and then slammed on his brakes causing the 3 following bikes to swerve out into the overtaking traffic.

David for losing his water bottle after bouncing through another massive Highland pothole.

Mike for deciding that the main water container tap was too slow and so contrived to allow the container to slide out of the van and smash the tap off.

Today's winner is Ian's glasses at mile 744.

Some other useless information, Stewart has been recording the amount of calories that he has burn't every day, guess what the total so far is.................
52,534! Saves going on a diet.

To conclude, spirits remain high, backsides remain sore, 187 miles to go.

Don't forget the messages, posting and calls they are really appreciated. Please, please keep donating.

Finally, finally only 3 days to go.

Sunday 5 July 2009

Day 9 Kilmarnock to Crianlarich (79 miles 734 to date)

An interesting day! The start was a little delayed as Stewart and Ian bmet some new friend's in the hotel bar last night, first their was 'Johnnie Walker' and then they made friend's with a 10 year old........Macallan. Anyhow these friends didn't seem so nice this morning and needless to say their normal performance levels were not achieved until later in the day with the helpful and friendly encouragement of their colleagues.

The route today took several back lanes, uphill and down glen to the Erskine Bridge, west of Glasgow. Shortly afterwards we stopped for the first tea break (very civilised) near Dumbarton and then we picked up a cycle route along the banks of the river upto Loch Lomond, beautiful. From there we tracked along the western shore of the loch, past Luss and Tarbett where it started to climb. It's so nice to have a 500foot climb at the end of a 70 mile cycle ride.

The mishaps today were, Kieron's helmet that was damaged in the Hotel store! And Andy's second spoke breakage of the trip. The decision goes to Kieon's helmet at mile 655.

The only downside today, which was a really scenic ride, was the condition of the roads. Clearly the Scottish Parliament is definately not investing in Highway Maintenance. Some of the surfaces were very rough with enormous potholes, causing more damage to already sore under-carriages.

While we are on the subject, we are now officially carrying a larger stock of skin protection/repair products than Boot's! We have everything fromVAseline to Annusol.

Robin would like to say Hello to Batman.

Again thank you for all your text's emails and postings of support they are really appreciated. Furthermore please keep donating, every little helps! (to steal a catchphrase).

Finally, finally only 4 days to go!!!!!!!!!!!

Saturday 4 July 2009

Day 8 Carlisle to Kilmarnock 97 miles (654 to date)

We have reached Scotland (hopefully pictures posted after this!). The first Scot we met was wearing an England football shirt with ‘Gerrard’ on the back – we all have the right to support a decent team!
Andrew and Kieron had decided to see how quickly they could do today’s ride and after the photo session at Gretna they headed off at top speed. They did very well, reaching the hotel around three hours before the ‘Peloton’ and also getting a free lunch and £13 in donations on the way.
All in all a good day’s riding with the main route along the Nith Valley. There were parts where the uphill road actually looked downhill and we all thought that we had run out of energy – we actually climbed to around 750 feet in an hour.

It was a quiet day in terms of mishaps, just two punctures, one for Dave (the 2nd in 3 hours of riding) and one for Andy. As this was the 2nd one in succession, we decided that the mishap was Dave’s at mile 591.

After much deliberation in court this evening it was decided that the Spanner of the Day should go to Brian for driving off with the back door of the van open, he hit 50 mph before picking up the phone to Stewart! Furthermore it was also decided that Vince should be ‘awarded’ a WKD wobbly wig for throwing his helmet on the ground, and swearing profusely at the top of one of the climbs.

The end of the day was a bit of an event trying to find the hotel, Andy and Kieron rode directly in, followed by Mike in the first van. Brian then called the hotel for instructions and drove straight but advising the main party of cyclists to take the main A77 (fast dual carriageway). All went to plan until Stewart was nearly taken out by a car entering the main carriageway, after the squeal of breaks it was decided for Adam’s mum’s sanity that the main group would an alternative route. This was OK except Dave was out of ear shot, so on he ploughed for the next hour trying to find the hotel, at least he hit his second century in 3 days.

Still we all made it which is the main thing. ‘Just’ 5 days to go and tomorrow is allegedly a little shorter at around 80 miles.

Keep the texts and messages coming, they really do make a difference. If you have sponsored us in the last few days then thank you, we check the site during the day and e very addition helps us to keep going. Keep voting on Stewart’s dilemma and if you have not already the SPONSOR US!!!!!

Day 7 Chorley to Carlisle 98 miles (557 so far)

Started off around half eight as planned, our initial route taking us through Preston in the rush hour - nice. Today’s route more or less followed the A6 all the way. We went through the 500 mile mark just before Kendall where we stopped to eat some Kendall Mint Cake, which we brought from home, to give us the energy to climb Shap – at 1400 feet the highest and probably the hardest climb of the trip. It drizzled from the second tea stop around 11 am until just after our last one around 4:30 pm. This made the day hard work and meant that we abandoned our plans for a pub lunch so that we kept moving in order to stay warm. Crossed from Lancashire into Cumbria, our last county in England. We finished the day around 6 pm and it only took Kieron three hours to clean his bike.

Stewart’s Garmin measures lots of different statistics including the calorie count. So far we have each burned 34,800 calories in seven days of riding. Quite incredible when you think that none of us have lost any weight!

The mishaps today were Adam almost cycling into a hedge whilst trying to look behind, David who had a puncture less than a mile from the hotel and Mike for stopping on a grass verge at a junction again instead of the layby 200 yards beforehand. The winner of the day, yet again, is Ian for falling off his bike, whilst stationary at 542 miles.

We have forgotten to mention that Stewart and Vince have jointly sponsored Brian £100 to shave off his beard on the last night. Having had a beard for over 50 years neither he nor his wife are keen to lose it but until the offer of sponsorship is bettered the bet stands.

Stewart has a dilemma that he needs some help with. He has been invited to Ascot for the day on the 11th July, the day after we get back. This was brought up by Ian in front of Stewart’s wife on the day we left. She is obviously not keen on him disappearing again so soon after getting back and she has just left it with Stewart to do the right thing. The difficulty is that Stewart is not sure what the right thing is so he needs your help. Post a comment on our blog to advise Stewart what you think he should do. The majority wins…..

Having reached the half way stage and with six days cycling left we thought it appropriate to get a comment from some of the team members.

Bloody Hell, only half way, David.

Without doubt the hardest physical and mental challenge that I have ever undertaken. However, I have nine fantastic guys with me, including my son, and the support, help and humour that they provide is invaluable. Vince.

I wish Ian would give us back the spanner. Stewart.

Only 443 miles before I throw my bike into the sea. Fantastic support from the chuckle brothers, Brian, Michael and Vic. Riding with a great set of blokes to achieve our aim of raising £10k for MacMillan. Please sponsor us if you have not already. Ian.

This trip should have been called 1000 Piles for MacMillan. Adam.

The Incredible Seven get fitter every day. This is probably only due to the care and attention they are receiving from the three stooges. Vic.

As a support driver I have enjoyed the first seven days along with the friendship of the team and am very much looking forward to the remainder of the trip. Michael.

Although I am only half way up the Country I am more than half way to getting a baboon’s arse. Andrew.

I am so pleased that I can spend three hours cleaning my bike every night without any complaints from my wife. Kieron.

I am glad that Murray lost today as we will not have any Scots gloating at us now! Stewart you should stand up for yourself and go to Ascot. Brian.

Carry on sending us texts and messages of support, they make a real difference. We are getting very close to our target so if you have not yet been able to sponsor us then now is the time. www.justgiving.com/1000milesformacmillan

Day 6 Stone to Chorley 80 miles (459 so far)

Very good day’s riding. We seemed to have sorted ourselves out in terms of a warm up then how to stick together better to get better speed and to help each other. A very hot day but not so hilly so it seemed cooler with the breeze. We passed into Cheshire, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
David is updating his twitter – FatDaveonaBike so check it out on twitter.com. David managed to miss the two County signs today because he was so far ahead of the rest of us.
The mishap mile today involved Vince who lost a screw on one of his cleats, Vic and Brian who missed our last water stop and Mike who decided that our lunch stop should be taken on a grass verge on a blind bend on the wrong side of the road. Kieron also broke his mudguard shortly before lunch and has had to visit the local bike shop to sort his gears out. The winner is Vince at 418 miles where Adam swapped shoes with his Dad who found them more comfortable than his own and did not want to give them back.
£25 was raised in an auction of lost items at this evening’s tour meeting.
Ian has retained the spanner, the wobbly wig and his WKD wig. Ian almost caused a pile up due to unscheduled gear changes on an incline causing almost all of us to nearly fall off. Ian feels that he world is against him at the moment so we will try to keep that feeling up as long as possible!
Andrew and Michael are both very relaxed and have slipped into tour mode. Kieron has been very quiet all day having returned to the tour after his exploits at home although he did do a good job getting the washing done although Brian complained that his underpants had not been ironed properly.
Stewart bought a new map bag (£40) for his bike which works as we only went wrong twice, a much better record than the Garmin at £400.
Generally spirits are high and we are looking forward to hitting the half way stage tomorrow. As long as we can get a connection we will update the blog with a brief review from each team member tomorrow.
Our thanks to all the staff at the Brook House Hotel for making us feel very welcome and also doing some of our laundry. Thanks also to the other guests who have donated generously to our fund.

Day 5 Worcester to Stone 64 miles (379 so far)

We all felt a little tired after yesterday’s exploits. By the time we had breakfast and drove to Worcester for the start we did not get going until 10:30. A very hot day making it hard work for us all. We crossed into Shropshire and Stafforshire following the Severn River Valley to start with. We arrived at Stone later than planned due to the terrain and the amount of times we needed to stop for drinks in the heat.
A pleasant evening was had at a local Indian Restaurant with three of Locky’s daughters. His daughter Sarah announced that she was getting engaged to Paddy, Ian responded by ordering another beer.
The Spanner passed from Vic to Locky for him taking the wrong route after he shot off in front in his desperate rush to get home to see his Mum. Ian was also awarded a WKD Wobble hat after moaning all day about the slow pace. He topped it off by getting the wobble wig – the first full house of the trip so far. Kieron came close to the spanner for deserting the ride early (to spend the night at home with his wife) although sentence is suspended as he took all our washing!
The mishap mile today was a bumble bee stinging Ian (it really was his day yesterday) on the forehead at 324 miles. Ian is fine but the bee has died of alcohol poisoning.
Some pictures will be uploaded shortly.
We are grateful to all those following our progress and their messages of support. Please keep all the texts and voice mail messages coming - it really does help us to keep going.
If you have donated already then thank you, we are edging ever nearer our target of £10k. If you have not had time to yet then visit our website www.justgiving.com/1000milesformacmillan

Day 4 Brean Sands to Worcester 100 miles (305 so far)

A very long day! 76 miles to our overnight stop at Hartpury near Gloucester. Having arrived around four we decided to push on for another 24 miles to hit the target of having at least one day where we did 100 miles. Fairly flat today in comparison to the West Country and not too hot. We crossed into three counties – Avon, Gloucester and Worcester.
Although a long day we all felt euphoric when we reached the 100 mile mark. It did help that there was a pub at the finish line!
Our Support Team continue to do us proud providing sustenance on demand.
The mishap was at 283 miles when the cyclists took a different route to that planned and failed to meet up with the Support Team. A frank discussion over whose fault it was took place at the pub at the finish line resulting in Brian and David both being awarded a WKD Wobble Hat – theirs for the remainder of the tour.
The Spanner has passed from David to Vic for numerous reasons!

Wednesday 1 July 2009

Day 3 Barnstaple to Brean Sands - 78 miles

Good day’s cycling. Quite hot and quite hilly to start with but flattened out as we got near to Taunton. We took the coward’s way out and skirted around Exmoor rather than go over it. Adam says that he thinks he had Exmoor when he was little and some cream cleared it up. We crossed from Devon into Somerset. David bonked after 15 miles – the result of going too fast too soon. Some energy drinks and food soon sorted him out. We managed to pretty much stick together and arrived at Brean Sands around half five.
We stayed at the Old Rectory Motel and ate at the Beachcomer pub just up the road. Our thanks go to the staff who allowed us to walk around with our collecting tins and the customers were very generous.. Thanks also to the staff at the Old Rectory for making us feel very welcome.
The spanner has passed from Vince to David (for his aforementioned bonk). The wobble wig continues to change hands frequently. The staff at the pub gave us some Magners and WKD hats so we now have a WKD wobble hat awarded to team members for the worst wobble of the day. The first award went to Stewart whose bike had fallen in the stinging nettles at one of our stops and he kept dropping his phone as he tried to retrieve it. We all left him alone for some time!

The mishap for today involved Andrew who had a broken spoke as we started - 127 miles. The winner will be announced shortly. No other serious mishaps to report.

Quick up date

We have just arrived in Stone 64 miles today, 100 miles yesterday and 78 the previous day. Adam has just told us we have done 371.51 ish miles in total. Ian got stung on the fore head AJ had 3 punchers and out of a total of 5 this was very high percentage. It was the hottest day so far and some of us found it hard in the heat of the day and the legs are very tired, some people are applying Sudo Ceme hourly. We will update this blog by the morning, if you have not yet donate please go on line at justgiving.com/1000milesformacmillan we are getting close to our £10,000.00 total.

Day 2: 62 miles from Wadebridge to Barnstaple

Day 2 completed successfully!

Another early start on our way before 9 am. All aches and pains from yesterday successfully treated - great idea Locky to treat your sore hamstrings with ice at the pub!

Not quite as hilly as yesterday, but it did rain all afternoon and we were cycling into the wind. A good day's riding though and we managed to pretty much stay together and all the stops worked well. Mugs are now available for tea stops although somebody has stolen all the handles! hopefully we will have enough spoons tomorrow....

The only mishap today was Kieron falling off at 123 miles. We'll put the winner's details on tomorrow. Good thing is no damage done although he has scratched his bike - hopefully he will be over the trauma tomorrow.

Spanner of the day has been awarded to Vince for leaving the Van unlocked last night - thanks to Stewart's security check on the way back from the pub nothing has been stolen!

Heartfelt thanks go to Simon and Sam, friends of the Johnsons who have laid on a lavish meal for us tonight. It is much appreciated.

Day 1: 27 Jun 65 miles to Wadebridge/Bodmin

Apologies for not updating the blog sooner, this is due to the lack of interweb access in Cornwall> Thankfully they now have roads which made the first day a little easier.

Day 1 is successfully completed!

65 miles down 935 to go!

The Mishap Mile* firstly concerned David, he apparently de-railed his chain at the bottom of a long very steep hill - on MILE 32
Adam then had a puncture 3/4 of a mile from the finish point.
The team has voted and David's mishap is the winner which makes the Day 1 winner "Twiggy" - for choosing this distance ... prizes drawn at end of the road!

We would like to pay tribute to our support team, Compo, Foggy and Clegg. They managed to miss our first rendez vous leaving us ravenous. They were then late for our lunch stop. The afternoon stop was an improvement although they had no milk for the tea, no mugs and nothing to light the gas stove with!

Thanks from us all to Julia for updating the blog. Thanks also to Brenda, Linda and Anita at the Boscastle Youth Hostel - a fantastic place to stay.

*Disaster Mile - £2 donated per mile chosen between one and one thousand for predicted gremlins and mishaps
